2K Hires Apex Legends Producer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Feedback

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last fall.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure informed employees about this decision through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a clearer direction.

The president expressed that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.

Here is the entire text from Ismailer's communication:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”

Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s the game testing phase was informative. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a more distinct brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to consideration and reimagined the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our audience.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the latest Director of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and experience in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to keep seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.

David

Title Details and Vision

Project Ethos was revealed in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the opponents with fresh skills, challenges, and challenges that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."

The game does not have an announced debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as production advances.
